The
Speech and Language Department
This Department is dedicated
to developing the communication skills of the children at the Centre.
Baselines are established
using assessment tools and appropriate goals are selected from the following
areas:
- Pre-language
- Semantics
- Syntax
- Pragmatics
- Voice
- Articulation
- Fluency
Through the use of
specialised teaching techniques, selected goals are achieved using toys,
pictures and computer programmes. Alternative augmentative communication tools,
such as signs, the pictures boards or Picture Exchange Communication System (
PECS) are used if verbal speech is not viable.
The aim of the Speech and
Language Department is to help the child achieve maximum potential in terms of
his or her ability to communicate.
Individual and group
sessions are provided to achieve the selected targets. Progress of the child is
monitored and biannual reports are submitted to the parents.
A comprehensive Home
Training Programme is put together to provide information on procedures to
achieve targeted goals. Resources materials to achieve the same are also
provided.
Parents are counselled and
on-going assistance is given as needed.
