Specialist
Autism Service
With the increasing number
of admissions of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders ( ASD ) at the Centre,
the need for specialised intervention was felt and the Autism Unit was founded
in 2000, the aim being to help such students integrate better in school, at
home and in the community.
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders are placed in classes appropriate to
their age/ability, along with other pupils with Special Needs in order to
improve their social and communication skills. Children attend sessions at the
Unit to address their specific needs.
At the Autism Unit, the
focus is on the following areas:
- Behaviour management
- Independent task completion
- Social and communication skills
A baseline assessment is
carried out, after which an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is formulated for
each student.
Instruction is given on a
one-to-one basis and specific teaching methods are implemented. Social stories,
sensory and play activities are also integrated into our programmes to target
the specific needs of children who fall under the category of Autism Spectrum
Disorders.
The selected goals and how
to achieve them are communicated to parents through the Home Programme.
