THE TRAINING PROGRAMME
A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TEAM consisting of a Special Educator, Speech
and Language Therapist, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist,
Vocational Trainer, Sports Instructor, Computer Teacher, Islamic and Arabic
Teacher, Art & Craft and Music Teacher formulates a programme for each
child, after a detailed assessment. In all the classes, as well as in the
Therapy Units, a similar structure is followed.
An assessment
is first done to determine the child’s level of functioning. Goals are selected in the different
areas of development. The programme is drawn up and implemented and finally, an
evaluation is done. Classroom goals
are selected from the Curriculum, for each child, according to his or her level
of functioning.
The Curriculum at Al Noor has been put together with input from
all the professional staff of AL Noor. The Curriculum consists of a checklist
of objectives in all the areas of development, arranged in developmental
sequence, from the most basic skill to independency.
The areas covered include not only Academics, Self
–Help skills, Motor skills, Language and Socialisation but also
extra-curricular activities like Vocational skills, Leisure Activities, Music,
Personal Welfare and Safety, Wheelchair skills, Self-Awareness, etc.
An Individual Education
Plan (IEP) is made for
each child. The term goals are selected from the Curriculum in the different
areas, in consultation with the members of the multi-disciplinary team. These
are further broken up into small workable units and weekly goals are set. The child’s performance of these tasks is
recorded every day. After the completion of one task in one area, the next task
is taken up. Instruction is, therefore, highly individualized and structured.
The IEP is a detailed record of the child’s
performance level in all areas. The aim of the Training Programme at Al Noor is
to help each child reach his or her maximum potential in all areas of
development.
