The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was established in 1989 as an autonomous organization in pursuance of National Policy on Education, 1986 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Keeping in view the need of the target groups, NIOS also provides a number of Vocational and Community oriented courses besides General and Academic courses. To cater to the needs of people with physical and mental disabilities, the NIOS has Accredited Institutions for Education of the Disadvantaged (SAIED).

Al Noor is the first Special School outside India to be accredited by NIOS. Al Noor started its first batch of NIOS Secondary Education Course in September 2005. The six students who appeared for the examination in April 2006 have all cleared.
